My top football memory is the whole experience surrounding Liverpool winning the Champions League in Istanbul in 2005. Watching us come from 3-0 down against Milan to win was incredible. That will die with me.

Stevie Gerrard started off playing centre midfield and ended up playing at right-back, where he was brilliant. Jamie Carragher kept pulling up every two minutes because he had cramp. How that team came together – Jimi Trarore, Vladimir Smicer – who scored the second goal – Harry Kewell going off injured … it was one of those ones: ‘you’re better to be lucky than good’.

At half-time all I was thinking was ‘Let’s just get one goal, something to celebrate’. Then Gerrard scored, then Smicer, Alonso’s penalty and then Dudek saving things he would never have saved 99 times out of 100.

When we played them two years later in Athens, I didn’t think they were as good and I thought we were better … and we lost!
