Lindsay McGee

I don’t follow football but this idea appealed to me as I have a fond memory of football connecting people.

I was lucky enough to have been able to visit Yangon (Rangoon) in Myanmar (Burma) as a tourist about seven years ago and during a taxi ride the driver asked me in his (very) broken English where I was from.

I said Scotland, but he hadn’t heard of it.

I tried to jog his memory – Edinburgh, Highlands, tartan, whisky … it’s near England! Near Ireland! Sean Connery! But nothing.

Clutching at straws, trying to explain, I finally said ‘Celtic’!

He yelled ‘Rangers’!

Finally, he knew where I was from and we chatted all the rest of the way, neither understanding each other, but it didn’t matter a jot.
