My fondest memory is of Dumbarton against Celtic in the semi-final of the League Cup in October 1970. We drew the first game 0-0 with Lawrie Wiliams, our goalkeeper, saving a Willie Wallace penalty.

In that game, where the Celtic team was made up of most of the Lisbon Lions, we played the best football of the night with Roy McCormack giving Billy McNeill, the Celtic captain, a particularly forgettable night!

We expected to be turned over in the replay but, if anything, we played even better but eventually lost 4-2 (I think) after extra time. It has to be said that two of Celtic’s goals should never have stood, particularly a goal from a Jimmy Johnstone corner which went out of play then swung back in!

Dumbarton should have gone through to the final but the usual decisions not going the small team’s way prevented that happening!

The teams for the first game were:
Dumbarton: Lawrie Williams, Kenny Jenkins, George Muir, Ferguson, Jack Bolton, Johnny Graham, Peter Coleman, Charlie Gallagher [ex Celtic], Roy McCormack, Joe Donnelly and Davie Wilson [ex Rangers].

Celtic: Williams, Craig, McGrain, Hay Murdoch, McNeill, Connelly, Johnstone, Hood, Wallace, Macari

Unfortunately, I can’t remember the teams from the second leg.
